October Bulletin Added on Sat 31 Oct 2009

Recent news:

Our condolences to Hugh Riddick on the sad loss of his wife. On a brighter note Astrid Platt has made a full recovery after a sudden illness and Ingrid continues to flourish. Rick is having his knee seen to. Our illustrious president, Peter Lloyd, is doing well after a bit of blip at the club.

The Willie John McBride Gala Dinner at The Cavendish was an outstanding success, raising £3,700 for club funds. Well done to Bruce and especially Lynette Rendle  for her hard work. Willie’s speech was a model of modesty, wit, warmth and wisdom. The Patrons table had a sweepstake on the length of his speech and the competition at 41 minutes was won by our own fat cat, Kerry Cook. Banker!  Vic Tidbury can’t remember a thing. The joys of alcohol.

On Thursday we duly embarked on our tour of Harvey’s Brewery ( a group of ten); our guide was the Head Brewer and Joint MD, Miles Jenner, who provided us with an interesting, informative and entertaining evening. His talk  was enriching in terms of both  its technical and historical content. A little after 8 p.m. we stopped for a few samples- Hadlow (light),  Best, Old, Tom Payne ( strong )and Russian stout (very strong)  passed our lips. We then retreated to the John Harvey Tavern for  another drink. At this point the party broke up and a dedicated trio, Goldsmith, Dickinson and Feakins, retired to the Shiraz Curry Emporium (not far from the Crown Court- just in case). We returned to Eastbourne after a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

Autumn Bulletin - September 2009 Added on Sun 13 Sep 2009

Dear All,

The season  starts this week with Eastbourne  1st XV away to KCS Old Boys. Attendance at training has been very good and the Club intends to field 4 teams on a regular basis. The first home game will be next week on 19th  versus Lewes. The usual arrangements for lunch are in place with our new president Peter Lloyd taking the chair. The jokes will no doubt be more cerebral.

Willie John McBride Gala Dinner at The Cavendish: We now have a Patrons' table and hopefully you have all booked your seats. Cheques payable to ERFC for £55 on the night please.

October 29th - Harveys Brewery Tour: I have  9 names on my list so far. 3 more needed, plus one possible if Rich Platt has to drop out for business reasons. Let me know soon.

Moroccan Evening November: Peter Bailey has undertaken to fill our bellies with hot & spicy nosh sometime in November. Watch this space.

Greetings from Michael Johnson (86) old player from years ago, now resident in Australia, last seen at The Red Lion in 2007.

Also Steve Jones former 1st XV captain and stalwart, now teaching in New Zealand.

The Club has produced a handsome glossy brochure with fixtures for the Senior and Junior teams, photos of last season's action at junior level, information about the club's teams, statements of policy, an introduction to our new Director of Rugby (plus cowboy hat); info on the Social Committee now under the watchful eye of Jane Brooks (our new bar manager) and a gallery of coaches for you to identify at your leisure.

As usual the Club will rely very heavily on financial support from its members- Patrons pay £50-please send your fees to Membership Secretary Suzanne Woods at 133 Milton Road Eastbourne BN21 1SS.

Also it is the Club's intention to install new floodlights as soon as possible and we need to raise as much money as possible to add to any grants we may get. Anyone with any good ideas, step forward now.

Sponsors also needed for coaches to away games to ease the travel burden on the 1st XV. Contributions gratefully received. At least 11 games are to be played away this season.

Copies of the Club brochure are freely available at The Clubhouse for those of you who are regular visitors, but I am sending others out to people who we don't see so often.

I hope to see you soon at Hampden Park, to enjoy a chat and a few pints with old friends.
