Eastbourne 1st XV 55 - 15 Haywards Heath

Josh Buckwell24 Jan 2023 - 13:49

After a long break over Christmas, Eastbourne first team finally got their season back underway against third in the table, Haywards Heath.

Eastbourne went into this game top of the league with a perfect record of 12 wins from 12 games and 60 points as they had secured a 4 try bonus point in every game.

Eastbourne continued where they left off, and raced to a 28-3 lead after 20 minutes, thanks to some exceptional play from the back row and back line, in particular the back 3 of Dowle, Bianchi and Viles. This was possible with the ever consistent front 5 giving them a great platform to play from - a great set piece and superb rucking and mauling.

First to cross the line was Ian Padget with a great break from 9, on the fringes of a ruck, to beat a number of players as he went through the gears to score under the posts. This was the start of a very solid performance for Padget playing in his new position of scrum half.

Heath responded with a penalty before Eastbourne went on the rampage. Owen Davis scored the first of his 3 exceptional short range tries, which were all rewards for his work rate and quick thinking to be in the right place at the right time.

Mason Dowle scored next after some lovely handling saw him speed away and side step a number of players. Dowle looked a threat all afternoon and created some lovely opportunities for others.

Dylan Viles was next to score and was the second player in the side to score a hattrick, all three of Viles's tries were from long range, beating players with ease and natural ability from his left wing position.

Heath respond with a well worked team try, before Davis and Viles crossed again and Skipper Jake Howe kicked his 5th conversion out of 6 for the half to cap off a great kicking performance and a solid leadership display. Howe carrying a rib injury, was rested for the second half.

Gianluca Bianchi was next to cross from his right wing, this was lovely to see as he had made some telling runs plus his work rate and defence was fantastic all afternoon. Viles and Davis were next on the score sheet rounding off their hattricks, all three conversions were missed.

With the game won, the last 20 minutes descended into a bit of chaos. With Heath clearly frustrated and, starting to cause some off the ball incidents to rattle Eastbourne and eventually result in retaliation.

The game saw 4 yellow cards in the last 20 minutes which was a shame for the game and the large crowd. However, a 55-15 win was a great day at the office for Eastbourne, as they look forward to another home game this Saturday at 2pm against Pulborough.

Man of the match was shared by Owen Davis and Dylan Viles for great performances and a hattrick each.
