Peter Sanders: 40 years of playing for Eastbourne

Tom Buttle9 Dec - 16:30

40 years. A lot has changed in that time — but one thing, one person, has remained ever-present: Peter Sanders

Cast your mind back four decades. Bob Geldof had just brought the world together through Live Aid. Viewers were glued to their televisions, waiting for the next EastEnders cliffhanger. And at Eastbourne RFC, a young Peter Sanders was pulling on the Blue and Gold for the very first time.

Just like EastEnders, Peter’s story has carried on. This year marks his 40th season representing Eastbourne RFC.

Starting out in youth rugby, Peter has grown into a true club stalwart, making friends and memories that have lasted a lifetime — many of whom he still shares a pint with at the clubhouse today. Over the years, he has represented countless sides, from the Vultures to, most recently, our Third Team.

Injury could easily have stopped him short of this incredible milestone. A torn bicep during the latest season would be enough for most people, especially in their 50s, to call it a day. But not Peter. With determination and focus, he recovered, got himself fit again, and returned to play on for a few more years yet.

There are many stories about Peter, nights out on tour ending with him locked out of hotels, last-minute 79th-minute kick-and-chases, and the hard-earned victories shared with teammates over the decades. But above all, his generosity, loyalty, and unwavering support for the club stand out. Whether it’s charity dinners, fundraising events, or sponsorship, Peter’s commitment is recognised by everyone who knows him.

He is, and always will be, part of the fabric of Eastbourne RFC.

And what of the future? The Sanders name looks set to live on at the club, with his daughter Scarlett now beginning her own playing journey with Eastbourne Women. We look forward to seeing Peter — and celebrating his support — for many more years to come.
