Eastbourne R.F.C. Match Report 24th October 2015

Uckfield 24- Eastbourne 13.

After three satisfying wins over tough opposition Eastbourne, lying fourth in London South East Three, travelled to Uckfield who had not yet won a match and were at the bottom of the league. The weather was mild, there was little breeze and the pitch was firm underfoot. Despite missing Matt Pysden at scrum-half and Charlie Smith on the wing, the Blue and Golds were confident of a successful outcome. However, they had not reckoned with a very determined home side, fielding a full-strength fifteen for the first time this season and intent on ending their losing run.

Despite some good ball and resolute attacks on the Uckfield line, Eastbourne were unable to gain any advantage and after some fifteen minutes of stalemate it was the home side who got on the score-board first, penetrating the visitors' defence to notch up a try and conversion. First blood to Uckfield. But a few minutes later Eastbourne replied with a magnificent penalty by Ben Barter at full-back. Eastbourne added to this score with a well worked try by Nathan Ring and went into the lead. The conversion attempt failed. Then just before half-time good work by Uckfield and poor defence by Eastbourne saw the home team register another try. At half-time, Eastbourne frustrated by an uncompromising and resolute opponent were down 12-8.

A poor kick-off from Eastbourne signalled a difficult second half for the visitors. Uckfield had a strong scrum, kept the ball tight, kicked with great effect and tackled well. Eastbourne failed to find any sense of rhythm and organisation. The line-out creaked and balls were lost in the loose despite some good charging runs by James Grey and one or two penetrating runs by Max Cheater. Eastbourne were frustrated at every turn by a local side sensing blood. After nearly ten minutes Uckfield breached the Eastbourne line and score a further try, well converted to take a 17-8 lead. Eastbourne were still struggling to make a positive response. For a long period there was no score but persistent and vigorous efforts by Uckfield brought them a final try which was duly converted. At this point some of the sluggishness displayed by the visitors vanished and for a short period Eastbourne threatened the home try-line. A very good move saw Max Cheater crash over for a consolation try. This remained unconverted. Despite Uckfield losing several players to the sin-bin, Eastbourne were unable to add to their score and came out losers at 24-13.

Eastbourne need to pick themselves up from this disappointment and prepare thoroughly
for the next confrontation with third-placed Heathfield at home on 7th November.

Team: Imich, Ring, Chilvers, Mottram, Farley, Redman, Grey, Cousins, Longton, Mackay, King, N., Clarke, Stevenson, Cheater, Barter, Hiremutt, Goldsmith, van Bentham.
