Park House 19-Eastbourne 41
After a narrow loss to Aylesford the Park Avenue team travelled to Kent rivals Park House, near neighbours to top side Bromley in a borough rich with rugby clubs. As the team bus approached the ground Skipper Steve Clark exhorted his men to action with a rousing speech. While the travelling supporters refreshed themselves the team prepared for an epic forward battle and some good running rugby on a firm and dry pitch. The rain would, mercifully, make a brief appearance only at the end of the match and the breeze, slightly in favour of the visitors in the second half, was minimal.
Park House came out determined to make a vigorous start and threatened to break through the Eastbourne defences. Attack after attack gained ground for them and only last-ditch covering prevented tries. But within ten minutes their strong forwards were able to take advantage of a position near the Blue and Golds' line and drove over for a first score, neatly converted to give them the lead. At this
point Eastbourne roused themselves to action and a quick passing movement saw the mercurial Max Cheater, having an excellent game, dash over for a try converted by Ben Barter. Within a few minutes Park House got their second touchdown which remained unconverted.
Again Eastbourne switched into a higher gear and excellent work by Matt Pysden and Gav Farley gave Max Cheater his second try. The conversion failed. Honours were even at half-time as Eastbourne threatened to break through with James Grey shaking off tackles at will. Eastbourne stepped up a gear and sent panic through the Park House ranks as their clearance kicks went astray and great runs from Redman, the ever-menacing Grey and Goldsmith, playing the game of his life. A yellow card for Park House's number eight gave Eastbourne the upper hand. Ten minutes into the half Sid Hiremutt sped over. Dan Keen bulldozed through after superb handling and a few minutes later Max got his hat-trick. Ben Barter converted. With fifteen minutes to go the home side had hardly been in the Eastbourne half and their heads dropped. Despite their captain's encouragement they were well-beaten. The hard work by their strong pack, which gave Eastbourne one or two problems, was to no avail.
The visitors managed to spoil the line-out and were able to poach possession at will, Ben Barter being especially adept at this. He was also able to make one or threatening breaks that gave the Kent side problems. James Grey added to the score-board ( a try converted by Ben Barter) and quick passing gave Sid Hiremutt space to run in a long-distance try to the corner. A well-deserved five-pointer after some great runs. With the clock ticking down to full-time Park House gained a consolation try and conversion. Final score Park House 19 - Eastbourne 41.This was a superb team effort, a determined second half display of skill and scoring. So many players stood out. But the man of the match went to Liam Goldsmith for his persistent effort and relentless energy.
