Eastbourne travelled along the coast on the occasion of the annual Seaford bonfire night and produced an outstanding performance which left their rivals reeling; fireworks came from every single Eastbourne player and the home side were left to be given a rocket by their coaching team.
For the Blue & Golds, it was a largely unchanged team that took the field. Nathan Ring came into the back row and added ball carrying skills to the forwards. The half back combination and centres showed superior fitness and skill over their opposite numbers and the back three scored 7 tries between them. But above all, it was a victory forged by speed of thought and playing as a team for each other.
From the outset the visitors will have been cheered by the number of supporters who had travelled to watch the local derby. Within minutes of the start, King had got his first try and following a superb reverse pass from Coulthard, he had two. The linkage between Pysden and McKay was making all the running and when flanker Redman followed another flowing move, he was on hand to cross for a another five pointer. Then in the space of just a few minutes before the interval, Eastbourne had 2 further tries; skipper Clark crossed following a tap penalty taken by scrum half Pysden and within seconds King managed his hat trick.
Turning round at 0-33,Eastbourne coach Aitkenhead sent on his 2 substitutes Webb and Van Bentham. Fresh forward legs put pressure onto the Seaford defence to force a line out on their own line, from which a penalty was conceded and Pysden made no mistake in crossing the whitewash. Thereafter, Coulthard`s first try was a beauty and King was able to get his 4th before being substituted.
Things could only get worse for the home side and a penalty try was followed by a score from Charlie Smith to take the score to 60 points. Seaford lost a player to a yellow card and their heads visibly dropped; their misery was compounded in the final quarter when Redman and Coulthard both scored their second try of the afternoon.
With such a commanding performance, it seemed invidious to pick a man of the match but James Coulthard at full back took the honours for an imperious show in attack and defence. A special word of thanks went to the referee for a first class performance with the whistle.
Eastbourne: Imich; Shuttleworth; Goldsmith; Mottram; Farley; Redman; Cousins; Ring; Pysden; McKay; Smith; Tennant; Clark; King; Coulthard; Webb; Van Bentham; Walker
