There’s sponsorship… and then there’s family sponsorship!
For Scarlett Sanders, having Ginger & Sanders as her player sponsor is particularly special because the person behind the business is her dad, Peter Sanders. And if that wasn’t enough of a connection, Pete has been part of Eastbourne Rugby Club for more than 40 years!
Scarlett, 18, has only been playing rugby for just over a year, but she has clearly taken to it – especially the bit she describes as “smashing into people.” Playing at flanker or No.8, she was introduced to rugby by her dad, who has been playing at Eastbourne for more than four decades.
Away from rugby, Scarlett is just as happy throwing punches in the boxing gym or getting a workout in!
SCARLETT'S QUICK FIRE
Favourite pre-match meal: Pasta. With anything. Scarlett just loves pasta!
Dream teammate: Zoe Harrison
Favourite professional player: Henry Pollock
Favourite team: Northampton Saints
Best rugby advice she's been given: “Just run and hit them.”
Secret talent/hidden fact: Her teammates might not know that Scarlett is terrified of spiders!
Most embarrassing rugby moment: Having her dad as a linesman!
What makes Eastbourne special?: "It feels like a family.” and perhaps that’s particularly fitting given Scarlett’s own family connection to the club.
MEET THE SPONSOR - GINGER & SANDERS
For Pete Sanders, rugby and Eastbourne Rugby Club are nothing new. He has been a member for more than 40 years, making his support of Scarlett – and the wider Womens team – a very personal one.
His business, Ginger & Sanders, specialises in residential lettings, sales and block management. Peter’s passion for property and block management began back in 2005, before moving into lettings in 2012. Today, the business is focused on making a positive difference to the running and management of buildings.
But for Peter, sponsoring players is about more than business.
“Being Eastbourne born and bred, we are all about community. As a local business you need to give back something.”
And he certainly gets plenty back from match days – although, as he admits, he sometimes enjoys the pre-match meals “a little too much!”
His favourite moment as a rugby dad? There’s an obvious answer:
Seeing the Womens team develop – and watching his daughter score her first try for Eastbourne.
When it comes to encouraging other local businesses to get involved with the club, his advice is simple:
“Just DO IT!”
For Scarlett, having her dad and Ginger & Sanders behind her is another reminder of what makes the club special. And with family, teammates and the wider Eastbourne rugby community all behind her, there’s clearly plenty more to come.
